NEW YORK - Two studies on the efficacy and safety of beta carotene recently completed by the National Cancer Institute have touched off a vigorous debate. The research shows that, contrary to previous claims, supplementation with beta carotene tablets is useless in preventing cancer or heart disease and, in certain cases, could be harmful to some people.

The federal health officials who conducted the research hope that the findings will end the illusion that a "magic pill" can fend off cancer and other diseases.
