Many of the debates about ATM center on two divergent views of its future. Some see ATM as providing only high-speed backbone links, with non-ATM technologies furnishing low-speed links to desktops and peripherals. Others, the "true believers," see ATM being used everywhere - clients, servers, peripherals, backbones, residential and even wireless and mobile links.
It is easier to imagine the first scenario than the second, because no one has any practical experience with an all-ATM environment. But while that scenario may be radical, it is premature to dismiss it.
