EU/MAURITANIA : COUNCIL ENDORSES NEW FISHERIES PROTOCOL.(European Union)(Brief article)

European fishermen and Mauritanian officials breathed a sigh of relief, on 15 July, after the Fisheries Council approved, by qualified majority (with Spain voting against), a new protocol concluded in March under the Fisheries Partnership Agreement. The protocol sets fishing possibilities for the period running from 1 August 2008 to 31 July 2012 for vessels flying the flag of an EU member state.

Under the new agreement, fishing possibilities for Community vessels operating in Mauritanian waters have been decreased by 25% for cephalopods (octopus), by 10% to 50% for demersal species, and by 43% for small pelagic species, bringing total tonnage to 250,000 a year from the ...
