This being a presidential election year, the Electoral College will have another of its days in the spotlight. Mike Dukakis, who should know better, is the latest celebrity to sign on to the idea of electing the president and vice president by popular vote.
It sounds so simple and logical. The candidate with the most votes would win the White House, period. No more elections like that of 2000, in which Al Gore won a half-million votes more than George Bush but lost the election. Seen in that light, the current Electoral College apparatus looks outmoded to many and should be changed.
