Virginia Beach's Evan Beck squeezed into the U.S. Junior Amateur as an alternate.
"A week ago, I was just happy to be in it," Beck said.
How quickly he has gone from "happy to be in it" to "Why not win it?"
Beck barreled through two matches Thursday to reach the quarterfinals, where he will play Miami's Ernesto Marin this morning at Shoal Creek (Ala.) Golf Club.
Beck dispatched Canada's Justin Shin 1-up in his morning match Thursday and came back in the afternoon to post a 3-and-2 victory over J.J. Spaun of San Dimas, Calif.
