A packed public meeting in Beverley sent a clear message to health chiefs that townsfolk want to save hospital beds in the town.
Around 250 people crowded into the Memorial Hall for the meeting, while dozens of others had to be turned away at the door as the hall had reached its capacity.
A petition with nearly 3,000 signatures calling for the retention of health services in Beverley was presented at the start of the meeting to representatives of the East Riding of Yorkshire Primary Care Trust, which is considering axing hospital beds at community hospitals throughout the region, including Beverley Westwood Hospital.
