Tens of thousands of families will benefit from the biggest shake-up of child fares for a decade, the Passenger Transport Authority has announced.
From September, passengers with an Under-16 card will be able to enjoy cheap travel, day and night, seven days a week across Tyne and Wear.
At present the Child Concessionary Fare, subsidised by travel company Nexus, is only available on weekdays until 7pm.
At other times, higher fares are charged by individual operators.
In a second boost, a new [pounds sterling]1 all-day ticket will give passengers under 16 unlimited travel on Metro, bus and the Shields Ferry.
