OVER the last four years, Maurice Littlewood has spent several hours every month collecting test tubes from air quality monitoring sites around Handsworth, Orgreave and Darnall.
His 18 'diffusion tubes' show the amount of nitrogen dioxide in the air over the last month and often show high levels of the chemical, which can lead to pneumonia and influenza, which causes lung damage after prolonged exposure and, as air scientists like to say, can lead to increased mortality. That is, it can kill people.
"It's an insidious gas, because unlike smoke from an exhaust you can't see it," says Maurice. "But you can't ignore it."
