HORSHAM MP Francis Maude has signed up to The Tiny Lives Charter to demonstrate his support for the introduction of a ten-year national research strategy to tackle premature birth.
The campaign is being spearheaded by national charity Action Medical Research which is based in North Parade, Horsham.
At the signing, Mr Maude posed with Paddington Bear, the charity's mascot.
Mr Maude said: "Twenty five UK babies die each week due to complications arising from premature birth and the impact is devastating for families, yet little is known about why early labour happens, or how to prevent it.
