STANDING before me is a handsome villa, perched precariously over the Liguria Sea and framed by two elegant palm trees. I have arrived at my destination via an undulating corniche that skirts around rocky coves of palm trees, cacti and cypresses.
I am on the eastern coast of Corsica's craggy Cap Corse: at Erbalunga, an appealingly rustic village of tiled villas with peeling stucco walls dripping with bougainvillea, hibiscus and mimosa.
The soft Mediterranean breeze is scented with the pungent aroma of chestnut. In the sundappled distance is the rocky outcrop of Elba and beyond that the coast of Tuscany. Closer geographically ...
