" On December 15th 1821, Cape Mesurado and adjoining lands were purchased from King Peter and five other kings and some "half-kings" by Captain Robert Stockton, agent of the American Colonisation Society. The signing ceremony was delayed when the Americans were accused of slaving, but the captain put his pistol to King Peter's head, forcing him to make his mark on the agreement. Thus was America's African colony, Liberia, born. Perhaps the names of Stockton's ships, Shark and Alligator, should have been a warning.
