THE Zambian government's insistence that the condition of President Levy Mwanawasa has been "stable" since his stroke a month ago reminds me of the South African government report, sent through to the Star's newsroom in February 1989, that said then-president P W Botha was "stable" after having had a stroke a few days before.
"For the first time in his career," remarked a cynical old sub-editor.
The Zambian assurances have been received with similar cynicism by Zambians, although for different reasons.
They are convinced Mwanawasa is permanently incapacitated and that the government doesn't want to acknowledge this publicly for fear of ...
