THE Zambian government's insistence that the condition of President Levy Mwanawasa has been "stable" since his stroke a month ago reminds me of the South African government report, sent through to the Star's newsroom in February 1989, that said then-president P W Botha was "stable" after having had a stroke a few days before.

The Zambian assurances have been received with similar cynicism by Zambians, although for different reasons.
