A unique seal and signature of Bartholomew Gosnold, a founding father of Jamestown, in America, has been unearthed at Bury St Edmunds Records Office.
Captain Gosnold sailed to the New World in 1606 on board the ship Godspeed to establish the first English speaking colony there.
The exciting find was discovered on a 16th century deed for land at Great Barton, while researchers were preparing an exhibition to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the settlers' landing.
Research assistant Liz Wigmore said: "I was terribly excited when I found the seal, I couldn't really believe it when it turned up.
