BOSTON _ The first marathon I ever went to was in 1967, back when this Boston Marathon was a very different race.
My college roommate's father was running then, a mailman from Long Island running his first marathon. Not that this was seen as being especially trendy back then, mind you. Running 26 miles back then was almost exclusively viewed as idiosyncratic at best, downright weird at worst.
