Last year, the Bonneville Power Administration and the Northwest Power and Conservation Council projected that by 2024 the region would need to find ways to incorporate 6,000 megawatts of wind energy into the electric grid. It turns out that the Northwest will need to move more quickly than expected.
Bonneville now says utilities and independent power producers plan to triple wind power production in the next five years, to 4,700 megawatts. The region isn't ready and will need an aggressive effort to upgrade its electrical infrastructure to accommodate this new resource.
