Introduction
Chemotherapy for metastatic colorectal cancer has undergone rapid developments in the last few years. The progress began when irinotecan and oxaliplatin became available. In first-line therapy, both agents improved response rates and progression-free survival when added to 5-fluorouracil/leucovorin (5-FU/FA) [1-4]. The use of all agents in a treatment sequence improved median overall survival to 20 months--compared with 12 months in the era of 5-FU monotherapy [5,6]. Further improvements can be achieved with the inclusion of monoclonal antibodies in colorectal cancer therapy [7-9].
