What's the attraction?
The industrial landscape of the Potteries is an unlikely place to find a forest full of monkeys, the UK's first. The 60-acre forest surrounded by fencing security gates, and next to Stoke's Trentham Gardens, is home for 140 barbary macaques, where they roam in freedom, lazing on rocks in the sunshine or playing through the trees with their youngsters. They're unfazed by the paying humans following a mile-long trail through the forest. It's an intimate experience, enhanced by the presence of knowledgeable staff, who roam the grounds to offer visitors an insight into the monkeys' behaviour and reveal some of the cheeky characters.
