GARDNER - At the Experience Gardner Festival/Sidewalk Sale last year, Mark P. Hawke was gearing up for the fall mayoral election, introducing himself to potential voters who flooded the downtown for food, shopping and entertainment.
He passed the strawberry shortcake booth, traditionally manned by local politicians, with the knowledge that winning the mayor's seat would secure him a spot serving the tasty dessert, a staple in what is generally the city's biggest event of the year.
It's just one of many perks of being an elected official, the mayor joked this week.
