ALMOST 100 YEARS HAVE PASSED SINCE THE BASEBALL WRITERS ASSOCIATION of America came into being during the 1908 World Series between the Cubs and Tigers in Detroit. The date of its formal birth was October 14, final day of the Series when the Cubs won the deciding game against Ty Cobb and Company, 2-0, before a sparse crowd of 6,210 fans at Bennet! Park.
With the support of National League president Harry Pulliam, the writers banded together to improve their working conditions, primarily to preserve the sanctity of the press box and to reduce restrictions that they claimed were being imposed on them by baseball management in general.
