LIKE all dads, I've told the odd white lie. I'm on first name terms with Santa, and quietly fancy the tooth fairy.

Sometimes, it's best to deal in fantasy, rather than reality. So, I've brought my kids up to believe in the purity of the Olympic Games.

I've told them to live by Olympic ideals, to learn from athletes whose every waking moment is dedicated to trying to be the best they can be.

I've asked them, basically, to live a lie. I should have come clean sooner.
