The 100th anniversary of the birth of one of Britain's greatest poets has evoked memories of a famous fight over Bury St Edmunds' ancient ruins.
During the 1960s, Sir John Betjeman was called in to help save the West Front buildings, next to St Edmundsbury Cathedral, which were threatened with demolition.
Sir John, a poet laureate, wrote a letter to the Government pleading for the buildings to be saved instead of being knocked down so that people could view ancient ruins near the cathedral.
