Apr. 24--A new ordinance regulating cigarette vending machines in Austin affects 48 companies that operate the machines.
The ordinance, approved 7-0 Thursday by the Austin City Council, makes the machines illegal except in businesses frequented only by people 18 and older. City officials don't know how many machines must be removed to comply with the ordinance.
Those in the business say cigarette machines in Austin generate at least $1 million and maybe as much as $11 million a year in revenues.
