WASHINGTON _ For more than half a century, photographer Harry Callahan fomented and refined his creative vision through a devotion to innovation and experimentation.
His fascination with the technical and inventive nature of photography helped stimulate a new aesthetic interest in the medium in the years that followed the end of World War II, and ultimately established him as one of the art form's pre-eminent masters.
In tribute to his long and distinguished career, Callahan's photographs are the focus of a retrospective exhibition on view at the National Gallery of Art.
