A boy who was born with no thumbs is making good progress in learning to write after pioneering surgery.

Tyler Dolan, eight, was born with 10 fingers - just like his mum - but surgeons transformed his life by turning a finger on each hand into a thumb.

Tyler had to learn to hold a pencil with his newly-formed right hand and he doesn't have to go back for a check-up until next year.

His mum, Clare, 30, of Oxclose, Washington, said: "He's doing fine. We went to Ibiza last year and he loved it. We're getting booked up for Spain this year.

"Now it's the holidays he's spending his time outside playing football."
