SHIPMENTS of rocks will arrive in South Tyneside this week as work starts on a [pounds sterling]1.7m coastal barrier scheme.

The first delivery will arrive at Trow Quarry, South Shields, today, with several more following during the week.

The rocks are needed for the construction of a rock barrier along the shoreline of Graham Sands and Southern Bay.

The barrier will protect the coastline against erosion from the sea for the next 50 years, and forms part of plans for the ongoing management of the coast in the area.
