Would you give up your car for a free bus pass?

DRIVERS could claim free bus travel in exchange for their old cars under proposals to get more people onto public transport.

Bus company Go North East has put forward the unorthodox proposal to give a free one to three-year travel pass to motorists who agree to hand over their car.

Managing director Peter Huntley said: "Everyone knows the cost of fuel is a major worry for everybody.

"However, we can turn this to our advantage by helping people leave their car at home in favour of cheaper bus and rail travel."

Go North East is inviting representatives of organisations such as Stagecoach and Nexus to a meeting in Birmingham ...
