Two years ago, in proposing the topic for AdI's current issue, I wrote that the conclusion of the second millennium and the beginning of the third millennium of the Christian era, in spite of or perhaps precisely because of such endings' and beginnings' artificiality, offer a most appropriate time--a unique and privileged kairos--to investigate the meaning and function of, as well as the many relationships between, beginnings and endings.
