The big issue of Iraq's Arab nature, the subject of a latent war of wits between the Sunni and Shi'ite communities in the Arab world and the rest of the Greater Middle East (GME), is coming to the forefront of political bargaining in Baghdad. The opening salvo in a heating of this war was delivered on July 27 by 'Ammar al-Hakim, the son and heir apparent of the leading Shi'ite Islamist politician in Iraq, as he said: "Iraq will no longer be used as a shield for the Arabs which they had hoped to revive" before the developments in the country during the past few years.
