The Lane Transit District is desperate enough for new revenue to have briefly considered the first ever property tax levy. Brief consideration is all the idea deserved. Any such proposal would reveal why the transit district is envied by the many other local governments that compete for slices of the property tax. The board voted unanimously Wednesday to put an LTD property tax back on the shelf - where it belongs.
LTD's primary revenue stream is the payroll tax, and compared to the property tax it's a gusher. For every dollar in the paycheck of every worker or self-employed person, LTD collects 0.6 cents.
