DARYL CHRISTENSEN, one of the best walleye anglers in the U.S., had been fishing Lake Erie for several days last April in preparation for a major fishing tournament. But although he'd enjoyed great success there in previous years, the unusually cold water and poor weather conditions were making things difficult for him.
"This is not what you expect to find here," said Christensen. "At Erie, all you have to do to catch walleyes is put your line in the water. You don't have to be a skilled angler like at Lake Oahe or some other places. Here, you pretty much just need to be able to turn the handle on your reel and keep steady pressure on a fish."
