IT IS not the objective of Labour to follow the biggest tax increase working people in this country have ever seen with further tax rises." So said Gordon Brown, the shadow chancellor, on April 23rd. Should the country believe him? Of course not, say Britain's Tories, who need no reminding that taxation was the key to their victory in the election of 1992. And that disdain seemed warranted when Clare Short, a member of the shadow cabinet, embarrassed the party leadership by saying that people like her (parliamentary salary, Pounds 34,085) should pay "a little bit more."
In fact, Mr Brown and Tony Blair, the party leader, should probably be taken at their word--vague ...
