THE new Fraud Act is a real weapon in the fight against identity fraud, according to a leading credit information service.

Equifax, said the new law would make identity fraud much more likely to attract prosecution.

The Fraud Act 2006 creates a new general offence of fraud with a maximum 10-year jail sentence, replacing all previous deception offences under the Theft Acts 1968-1996.

The new offence can be committed in three ways; by false representation, by failing to disclose information and by abuse of position
