Anyone can be affected by mouth cancer and there are on average 43,000 new cases of the illness diagnosed in the UK each year - however if it is spotted early, the chances of a complete cure are good.
The illness can develop in any part of the mouth, including the tongue, the gums, the skin lining of the mouth or lips. It affects men more than women and is rare in people under 40, though recent research has shown mouth cancer is becoming more common in younger patients and women.
