It is a habit of Anglo-American dantisti, especially those working in North America, to reflect upon what they are doing, usually with some degree of wonder: how is it that after almost seven hundred years, and in an intellectual, religious, and cultural climate so removed from Trecento Florence, they can produce so much work, such interesting work, on Dante?
