MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay, Aug. 5, 2008 (IPS/GIN) -- "We may get rich without achieving gender equality," said Roberto Bissio, coordinator of the Social Watch network, explaining that activists therefore "must not postpone action until we are rich and happy."
More than half of the world's women live in countries that have made no progress in closing the gap between men and women in recent years, according to the 2008 Gender Equity Index, launched in February by Social Watch, an international coalition of civil society organizations based in Montevideo, Uruguay.
