Article: South Ossetia rejects peace talks.

The leader of Georgia's separatist region of South Ossetia has rejected plans for direct talks with Tbilisi this week as violence continued to flare in the mountain province.

Eduard Kokoity, South Ossetia's de facto president, said: "There will be no bilateral meeting on Thursday. We are ready to carry on negotiations in Tskhinvali [the rebel capital], but only in the four-party format."

Tbilisi has rejected talks under such a format, which consists of negotiators from Georgia, Russia, South Ossetia and Russia's North Ossetia region.

Georgia says the composition is biased in favour of the separatists.
