AS the obesity epidemic sweeps the nation, it's not just humans who find themselves overweight, but many of our four-legged friends have to fight the battle of the bulge too.

A new pet "weightwatching" service is now up and running at a Peterborough veterinary surgery in a bid to help dumpy dogs, chubby cats and tubby bunnies lose weight.

And nine-year-old cocker spaniel Ben is one of the first success stories of the classes at the Pengelly & Mizen surgery, in Park Road.

Ben weighed in at 22.5kgs when he first started on the diet regime in October - and his owners, Rosemary and William Kynnersley, were told his target weight was 18kgs.
