DELIVERING extra junk mail through Peterborough's letter boxes would be an environmental disaster.
That is the view of Cllr Graham Murphy who believes Royal Mail's bid to post an unlimited amount of junk mail would fly in the face of the city's green credentials.
He said that vast amounts of unopened mail would end up in the town's landfill sites as a result.
And if Peterborough fails to recycle more of its rubbish, in line with strict European Union directives, it is the taxpayer who will foot the bill for millions of pounds.
The Royal Mail is currently allowed to deliver three items of junk mail to homes every week.
