CITY cricketing legend Ajaz Akhtar was crowned The Evening Telegraph Sports Personality of the Year at the presentation dinner at the city's Holiday Inn on Friday night.

A staggering 12,234 votes were cast by readers and Akhtar emerged victorious in the most prestigious poll of them all.

The 37 year-old has finished in the top three before, but he admitted he thought his chance had gone.
