ALISTAIR Darling was accused yesterday of 'paralysing' the housing market by dithering over whether to suspend stamp duty.

The Tories told the Chancellor he was playing 'damaging short-term games' with the economy through his failure to end uncertainty over the future of the property levy.

The criticism was unanimously backed by economists, estate agents and house builders, who said the delay would 'turn off the life support' for the property market.

Their anger stems from a BBC radio interview Mr Darling gave this week, when he said the Treasury was looking at a number of options to kick-start the economy.
