Encryption literally means 'hiding away'. In computing terms, this means scrambling files, emails or communications to make sure they can't be read by anyone who's not supposed to read them.

Why would you want to do that? Well, you probably use encryption every day without knowing it. Every time you log in to your online banking service or shop online with a reputable company, the connection between you and the website is encrypted.
