Brothers Jay and Mark Duplass spend less money making one of their feature films than most American families spend on a new car. They shoot quick and cheap, working closely with actors who are encouraged to improvise, and their production model and hypernaturalist aesthetic have made them stars in the loose movement of microbudget filmmaking that has been labeled "Mumblecore."
An unfortunate moniker, to be sure, but Mark Duplass isn't complaining. "Any label anybody wants to put on them, we say just go for it. Because getting attention to little tiny movies made for 10 (thousand) to 15,000 dollars is great." It seems to have worked.
