After 77 years, Home Port restaurant in the tiny Martha's Vineyard fishing village of Menemsha is closing its doors. It's a major topic of conversation on the island.
"Yes, it looks like this may be our last summer," confirms a T-shirted, college-age employee.
"Horrid!" bewails a 12th-generation islander who's been coming here since childhood. "We're all talking about what we're going to do."
With its no-frills menu of boiled, broiled and fried seafood, bring-your-own alcohol policy and picturesque views of Menemsha Pond, Home Port has been feeding hungry islanders since 1931. Is there any more archetypal, Vineyard dining experience?
