NEW YORK -- For Herman's Sporting Goods, the game is just about lost.
The beleaguered chain, which has fought a losing battle over the past 18 months against a stagnant sporting goods industry and encroaching megastore retailers, disclosed Wednesday that it would liquidate its 117-store chain beginning in about two weeks.
The sad news came in court papers, filed by Herman's, requesting permission to run going-out-of-business sales, hire a liquidator and set up a procedure to reject leases.
