FRANCES SCHULTZ: The Hamptons used to be typified by charming little cottages like yours, but they're becoming almost extinct now. How did you find it?

LESLIE KLOTZ: I saw it in a real estate brochure. When I asked my broker about it, he told me not to bother--it was a dark, cramped house with small rooms and low ceilings, and it was on a spit of land barely big enough to park my Mini Cooper. Everything he said was true, but he'd managed to miss the sweetness of the place. It really did look like time had passed it by, and I saw tons of potential. I knew that the worst features could be fixed.
