FEARS are growing that red squirrels in the Borders may be wiped out after the discovery that a killer virus has spread to the area.
The first case of a red squirrel dying in Scotland as a result of squirrel pox was confirmed at the weekend.
Now animal health experts have appealed for anyone who spots a sick squirrel to contact Scottish Natural Heritage immediately.
"Once red squirrels develop lesions they are extremely infectious and we desperately need the public in the South of Scotland to report ill red and grey squirrels," said Ann-Marie McMaster, the area's red squirrel conservation officer.
