Identifying the characteristics of a chemical reaction is not a task restricted to only chemists (AAAS 1993; NRC 1996; Siebert and McIntosh 2001). Labeled as the central science, the field of chemistry plays a pivotal role in the other sciences (e.g., physics, biology, geology, engineering, medicine) and has been identified as "a powerful force in shaping society today" (Hill and Kolb 2007, p. 9). In addition, a conceptual understanding of chemical reactions is identified as a scientific literacy goal for all students as mandated by science education reform initiatives (AAAS 1993; NRC 1996; Siebert and McIntosh 2001).
