Town commemorates friendship with Bamberg Oberburgermeister Herbert Lauer.
A friend from afar was welcomed back to Bedford on Tuesday and awarded the freedom of the borough.
Herbert Lauer, Oberburgermeister of Bedford's twin town Bamberg, was honoured at a ceremony at the Swan Hotel.
He will retire from the post, the German equivalent of Mayor, later this year.
Herr Lauer said: "I don't know how many times I have been to Bedford now, but it always feels like home.
"Over the last 23 years I have made real friends here and I hope it carries on."
