Small is beautiful and big is bad.
It may sound like a line from George Orwell's Animal Farm, but that is the slogan coming from Mid Beds District Council as it pushes its case to form a unitary authority.
Mid Beds is proposing to merge with South Beds to create a new Central Beds body, running all major services from Ampthill to Dunstable.
Its scheme goes hand-in-hand with Bedford Borough Council's bid, which wants to cover the north of the county.
Tricia Turner, leader of Mid Beds, said its blueprint was a better bet than the rival county council bid.
