Hebron, the city where Abraham, Sarah and other patriarchs are said to be buried, has been particularly embattled in recent years. Its problems began some 20 years ago when Jewish settlers, claiming an exclusive right not only to the city, but to all of Palestine, began moving into Hebron.
Those Jewish settlers, some 400 of them, have set up enclaves in the heart of Hebron, amid some 120,000 Palestinians who regard the area as home. The Jewish settlers are guarded by 1,200 Israeli soldiers.
Nearby in Kiryat Arba, another 6,000 Jewish settlers, drawn from militant factions, have settled in. They are heavily armed, walking about with machine guns in sight.
